Research the employer (plus the interviewer and other employees, if possible) very thoroughly. Someone – wish I could remember who! – summed it up perfectly in a Tweet a few years ago: Never ask a question in an interview that you could have answered with Google.

I always asked where the previous incumbent had gone (if I was applying for a job which had been filled by someone else previously). I hoped that the person had been promoted within the company. If possible, I asked for a chance to talk with the former incumbent to see what they were like, and what they had to say about the job – most fun, biggest challenges, typical year, typical day, etc.
